Title: J# Post by: Job on June 04, 2004, 04:26:50 am I just discovered J# (it came with my Visual Studio .net). It uses the exact same syntax as Java, though it is made by Microsoft, probably as an attempt to convert Java fans. I still have to find any real advantage of J# since i just started with it today, but i imagine it has, like java, automatic memory management, and that it probably doesn't need a virtual machine, which would make it faster perhaps.
I'm happy with it though, because it's another language i can claim to know rather well. :) Title: J# Post by: Devlyn on June 04, 2004, 12:17:00 pm lol!!! So if you know Java, you know J# as well? :P
Title: J# Post by: Zylokh on June 04, 2004, 01:43:32 pm So that makes one more language I know nothing of...
Title: J# Post by: bEn on June 04, 2004, 04:35:55 pm Probably like C# ... it's a nice idea but I think it won't convert the Java Programmers due to :
-Java is more platform independent than .NET (as far as I know the .NET stuff is still mostly windows...) -usually if you use Java for this online purposes (if you know java you know what I mean Javabeans, RPC, Sun ONE) there is no necessary to change. -Another thing is - like in C# vs C++ you will find small differences between the "original" and it's follow up. I guess the most curious thing about that is that Microsoft has severe fights with Sun and Java (stuff like the lack of a virtual java machine in XP because they didn't implement it the according to the standard etc)... well they gotta know Title: J# Post by: Anonymous on June 07, 2004, 12:19:33 pm Like all MS languages - Microsoft have included the standard libraries of the code, but have extended the API for integrated MS-only commands.
Plus, the .NET framework is language independent with respect to Visual languages, so you can write bits in J#, C# & VB.NET to work together. Tasty work for MS-platform developers. Title: J# Post by: Ty on June 07, 2004, 12:48:59 pm http://go-mono.net/
Don't have Linux so I don't know how good Mono is, but it certainly sounds promising. Where can i get one like that? ? Title: J# Post by: Akir on November 13, 2005, 09:15:32 pm If J# has the same syntax as Java, maybe Sun will sue Microsoft, distroying everything windows-compatible and starting an *nix revolution!!!!!!
Did I mention I have to re-install windows at least 4 times a year? Title: J# Post by: Ty on November 14, 2005, 12:14:27 am I've gone a total of 8 years without a Windows re-install (XP and WinMe), and Ubuntu only worked on 1 of my 3 PCs. I've looked at Linux, and when I get my new computer I'll install it on my laptop.
At the end of the day, it's only an operating system. I'd rather go outside :P Title: J# Post by: Ty on November 25, 2005, 06:09:49 pm As a follow up, I'm currently running Mepis (http://www.mepis.com/) on my laptop, which is the first Linux distro that's ever got this far. It might even get the privelage of being installed alongside XP :P
