Title: A Shining conversation
Post by: Newts on November 16, 2004, 07:47:22 pm
This is the closest I can get to a post about the Shining series. I was in a lecture today with my mate Steve, who I've only known for a while, suddenly asks me...

Steve: Have you heard of Shining Force and Shining Force II?
Me (excited): YES! I am the biggest Shining Force fan in the entire world!
Steve: No you're not, I am!
Me: Have you got Shining Force III?
Steve: (pause) there was a third one?

After that, I go on to tell him all about SFIII, and how it's the best game ever created, and he's so impressed that he agrees to buy a Saturn in Gamestation on the promise I lend him SFIII. We get to Gamestation and... no Saturn for sale! I was really quite disappointed for him, especially as he admitted to me that, during the lecture, he was trying to remember the order characters join your squad in Shining Force II - he said he got stuck at Luke. Also, I plugged SFW, but as he doesn't have 'net access that's not an option, but I will be using the list of SF-like games to help him out - he's only a poor PS2 owner, and wasn't too happy when I told him about SFIV!

The guy's a legend, he just needs SFIII ;)

I'm sure gamestation can get a Saturn sent over from another branch, ask the staff there. They have them in the one over here, and theres loads of them in the Northampton one i go to. I'm sure the Saturns arent the biggest sellers at the moment, so theres no reason why they shouldnt make the effort to get one sent over in order to make a sale :)

Perhaps Ebay is a decent option for him? :)

Still, he sounds like a cool guy! A real old skool fan like me ;).

Do these old Saturn still work? I thought they had a lot of problems with their memory batteries, for which you can not find any replacement...

They run out every couple of years, but replacement batteries are very easy to find - you need CR2032 Lithium Ion batteries, which are pretty much the standard for memory backup. Old Saturns still work perfectly well to this day :)

At the moment he only has a PS2 because of money troubles, and when I told him Shining Force IV was coming to the platform his eyes lit up, but I firmly extinguished them by telling him it wasn't the tactical battle system that we all know and love. Poor fella.

I'll go into Gamestation again next week and see if they have one in for him, as he really, really needs to play SFIII, as indeed everyone does.

Well, the idea we have of the battle system of SFIV is not really accurate, I believe, as it is based on 2 images and a few words in a communication advertisement by Sega. I still hope that these hints that the battle system will have changed are false...

Pray with me, my friends....

As to your mate, maybe you could also point out all the other shining games (maybe not everything simultaneously as to not killing him)

Just a quick this one (should be doing work!), but IGN have two trailers of SFIV for the PS2, one only uploaded two weeks ago, which I will kindly link to right here (http://media.ps2.ign.com/media/679/679394/vids_1.html). I haven't watched the top one yet, but the bottom one definitely shows battles, although maybe they've been changed. We'll see eh?

EDIT - they're actually the same footage, but the top one is a direct feed, rather than being filmed from a screen, so get the top one.

Sorry Earon, I can't help you on that one. There are some people in General Blah who may know how to hook you up, but that's nothing to do with me and I will not partake in any criminal activity :newtstongue:
