With Pipe-o-Justice in hand (yes its really in my hand..)
I declare that i both miss and desire the return of Shining Online!

Like other great people of our time i shall commit to starving myself until work on it is undertaken once again!

Perhaps we could discuss about it a while :)

This is a topic long overdue, mate. I've been browsing through my SOnline folder - as I do from time to time - and there are so many good memories in there.

Remember the SOcast from the live launch chat? I have that.

Remember the old blue template, and when everyone had postcounts in the thousands? I have an FAQ from those days.

TALK ABOUT SO, DAMMIT.

More to come later.

I remember emailing you about it in... 2000, was it? I do believe it was. Back when the SFIII HQ was up :)

Man, it's hard to believe it's been five years since we started SOnline. It made all the difference to know you were onboard supporting us all those years mate :)

I found this buried in the SOnline archives:

Shining Online - Plot

Introduction

For years, the nomads of Vagabond have travelled all over the continents of the world, earning a living by selling and trading all kinds of items. Some years ago Tensai, the leader of the camp, came across a young boy hidden inside a crate of fine silks. Naming the boy Cody, Tensai brought him back to the village, where he lives until this very day...

Chapter I - The Life of a Vagabond

After successfully fending off a monster attack in the south, Cody and the villagers of Vagabond move North to safety, stopping to make repairs and take stock of the situation. Tensai and the other village elders agree to award Cody for his bravery against the monster attack, and announce a special presentation to be held in his honour. The villagers begin to make preparations, and Cody is sent out into the forest to collect wood for the fire.

Taking an axe, he ventures into the nearby forest of Evergreen, but is ambushed by a group of monsters! Despite his best efforts, Cody is overpowered and knocked unconscious, but he awakes several hours later in the treetops of Evergreen, surrounded by wood elves. Two of the elves introduce themselves as Ken and Harmony, and explain how they rescued Cody and brought him back to their village. Although grateful for their help, Cody wants to leave as soon as possible to avoid being late for his presentation, so Ken and Harmony agree to escort him back home.

Ken the Wood Elf and Harmony the Mage join the Force!

After fending off another enemy attack in the forest, the group arrive at Vagabond to find it burnt to the ground! Rushing to the help of the villagers, Cody and the others realise that Tensai is nowhere to be seen, so they ask his daughter, Faye, what happened to the village and its leader. She tells them how a group of powerful mercenaries came and looted the village before leaving with Tensai, so the Force decide to pursue the group and rescue him. Reluctant to leave the villagers behind, Faye has the idea of moving them into the village of Evergreen, an idea happily arranged by Ken, who calls a village elder down with a flute and gets the ball rolling. Accommodation sorted, the Force leave to rescue Tensai!

Faye the Healer joins the Force!

On their way out of the village, the Force hears a shout from Vagabond and a stranger chases after them, handing Cody his reward - an Escape Book!

Cody learnt the spell Escape!
You join the Force!

Cody is determined to catch the mercenaries, and sure enough his urgency pays off as the group soon catches up with the slower mercs. Engaging them in battle, the Force manages to dispatch them, and Cody angrily confronts their leader, demanding answers. He draws a blank, however, as it seems nobody was told exactly what they were looking for in Vagabond, and that only the highest-ranking of the mercenaries knew. Even the second-in-command knew nothing about it, but he surrenders himself to Cody and asks to be given a chance to find out the truth.

Sean the Mercenary joins the Force!

As the night draws in, Cody's Force follow Sean's directions to Twilight village, where he believes the mercenaries will stay the night. Although Ken is worried about spending the night in the same town as bloodthirsty warriors, Harmony persuades him it's a better option than spending the night out in the middle of nowhere. Exhausted, the group arrive at Twilight village to find it empty, save for the distant sound of revelry, eminating from the inn. Charging in, Cody discovers the mercenaries drinking, singing and looting the bar, and Sean recognises their chief at the back. The Force battle the slightly merry group in the confines of the pub, but obviously they didn't drink their glass of Armour Milk before all that Power Beer, and they are swiftly defeated. In his dying throes, the lead mercenary manages to utter "Gal... Gal... Spir..." before departing to the big Twilight Inn in the sky. Faye, in the mean time, has managed to find her father in the cellar, bruised but otherwise fine. Inside their temporary shelter, Tensai tells the Force he knows the reason Vagabond was attacked, and suggests they visit the nearby town of Astronima, where all will be explained.

After seeing his home town of Vagabond burnt down and his foster father Tensai kidnapped, Cody assembled a group of friends to help him catch those responsible.

Along the way, they managed to recruit one of the mercenaries, who led them to the head of the soldiers in Twilight village and helped them defeat his former employer.

Although the chief's last words made no sense, Tensai has promised to tell the Force the truth about what happened, and that a trip to Astronima will answer all their questions.

~ End Chapter I - The Life of a Vagabond ~

I liked the first chapter, although I wasn't keen on some of the RPG clich?s. Somewhere there's the beginnings of a script, but it's not much without the action to back it up. Maybe a few well-placed words in the right ears would help..?

Look what I found!

Some very nice art of Ken enjoying nature.

(http://www.prosody.co.uk/newtsevil.gif) (http://www.prosody.co.uk/crying.gif) (http://www.prosody.co.uk/newtssad.gif) (http://www.prosody.co.uk/sleeping.gif) (http://www.prosody.co.uk/newtsshocked.gif) (http://www.prosody.co.uk/newtstongue.gif) (http://www.prosody.co.uk/newtshappy.gif)

They're back! I demand they be added to the emoticons list again so I don't have to keep doing image tags :P

If it ever comes back, the pipe story will be immortalised, possibly in some form of book or something. Or maybe you could go up to everyone in the game, ask them about the pipe, and they could tell you about it ;)

Title: SOnline
Post by: Newts on May 10, 2005, 02:15:43 pm
Not necessarily - it just means I'm vain and wanted people to talk about SOnline. It would be nice if it did return, but that's not my decision to make.

I recorded some live SOnline music earlier, which I'll upload for your aural pleasure later.

DOOM EDIT:

I found these excellent quotes in the FAQ, and wanted to share them with you all.

Seanikins

Ive been with SOnline since the beggining, and i know in my heart that this will truly bring people together in a way that they've only imagined. Things that are this good dont come into existence very often...it requires a vision, emotional pain, depression, inspiration, determination, blood, sweat, and tears to create something even remotely close to SOnline. I promise that i will devote much of my time to (in some miniscual way) repay the Entire Staff of Smash Software, and other participants in this project. I am proud to be a part of such a beautiful gaming creation...and as i was there at the beggining, i shall undoubtibly be there at the very end.

Ty

Q: If it came down to a large workload, low player turnout (just me i guess hehe) low morale and even lower spirits...would you still further the SOnline Project untill the very end?
A: Yep :) It will get finished, and we will support it even when things are bad.

I might steal the old phpBB template/colours for my forum - it looks awesome.

ahhhh...the shrine theme

So dark and yet serene. Beautiful in its own regard.

Also a place of great pain and suffering, as Ken will tell you.

Ive stepped one tile of the far bridge by the greatest symbol etched into the ground...and there unfortunately is where my adventure almost always stops :(

Brilliant :)

It is a gorgeous piece of music, mate. The full version, with horns and violins and everything, will probably be up... some day. I don't know when.

So much suffering has taken place there... I've only ever been there once :P

Aren't you glad exams don't last forever, then? :newtstongue:

The Vagabond theme came fairly quickly, I seem to recall - I don't remember much about it, but it's a fairly simple tune so it was probably quite a quick one. It was the second or third piece I wrote for SO actually, which is probably why it's so simplistic, but it's certainly the catchiest, hummiest one there :newtshappy:

http://www.prosody.co.uk/Marching.mid

A marching theme from Sir Phill. Actually very good, when you listen to it. Better than any marching theme I've written, that's for sure :newtstongue:

Exams vs. Ty is an age-old battle, just like Trent vs. Ken - they keep knocking him down and he just gets up to take another one for the team. Always with the knackers. Poor guy.

Not too much more content in this post, apart from my obviously much improved avatar and sig. I'll try and create a gif animation of Trent vs. Ken just for you, mate :)

We can only hope that this continued nagging will have its desired effect :)

Another tune which would've made it into the final game:

http://www.prosody.co.uk/SOnlinetune.mp3

I like this tune a lot. It's very clever. Sean seems to think it'd be a good inn theme, but I definitely see it as a triumphant, almost anthemic piece. It probably would've been an introduction theme or something, or I could adapt it for a pub theme... or maybe a smithy! The opportunities are many and varied :)

It'd be really cool if you could finish it some day! I'm even willing to help with it, and somewhere I'd really like to have a single level as pack-in demo for BABS sometime ;).

Title: SOnline
Post by: Newts on May 11, 2005, 06:36:11 pm
Dev - I'll consider BABSifying the Shrine battle for you in a few weeks. That way people might actually be able to complete it ;)

At the moment SO's completion is but a distant dream. But, like all dreams, it gets nearer every day. Unless it never gets finished, of course.

Sounds great!
Let me know what kind of spells you need for that battle though! That way I can add appropriate support for those spells :).

The spells currently supported are:
Blaze 1-3
Bolt 1-2
Heal 1-2

Title: SOnline
Post by: Newts on May 11, 2005, 06:45:14 pm
Seeing as we didn't have magic in the demo, I'm not quite sure what to say :P

We'll definitely need Escape/Egress level 1, Blaze level 1 and Heal level 1. I think that's it... I don't really know what's in Demo 3B to be honest :P

Title: SOnline
Post by: Devlyn on May 11, 2005, 06:47:02 pm
Escape/Egress level 1? Sounds do-able to me.

As for anything else, just name it. Implementing new spells isn't that hard to do, it takes 20 minutes tops once I have the animation :).

I did find some cool magic icons on my computer, but I'm not too sure what spells they were going to be... one appears to be some sort of UFO, so I presume we were going to have an "alien abduction" spell. There was one super-useful spell as well, but that's staying secret. Had a nice icon though ;)

Hi
I'm not going to pretend that I've been lurking here for years (because I haven't) and I'm not going to pretend that I knew about this project before Omar and Newts meantioned it.

But I will say that I think it's a shame that any fan project stops when it has such an eager audience. Heck, Omar's so eager you could be forgiven for thinking he was 10 people.

If you don't make this, you just know he won't stop talking about it until you do.
Not that he would stop talking about it then either, but at least he'll be in a better mood. (http://www.brotherhoodofmedion.co.uk/forums/style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

I realise some people posting on this topic might never have played Shining Online before, so here's the last demo we ever released. It's buggy but has got shitloads of charm.

So, for their benefit, download the demo -> HERE (http://www.shiningsource.net/releases.php?id=1) <-

I'm not saying SOnline - if it comes back - will look like that, but it should certainly play like that. A finer approximation of the Shining style you will not find ANYWHERE.

EDIT: Chris, that's by far the most accurate and sensible post Ye Olde Blah has ever seen, and I salute you for it. We had quite a fanbase - on Demo 4 Launch Day, Seanikins awaited the release by occupying our chatroom for close to twelve hours, which is a gargantuan feat, really. It'd be worth completing just to repay some of his and Omar's faith and hope.

Trust me, it is worth it with any fanwork, even if you post it somewhere and forget about it.
I once had a complete stranger come up to me online and say "hey, you're the guy that wrote that PSO FAQ".

You'd be surprised the amount of times people will say, "I'm bored, give me something to do", see a link that someone has posted or get to your site via an internet search, and then bang, you've got another fan.

Chris - I used to get quite a lot of people talking to me about it on AIM and MSN, and through here. Mostly people that found links/did searches and all that. We had quite a big fanbase at the time, but the Shining scene has sort of displaced in recent times, so we're a bit thin on members at the moment. I'm sure a revitalised Shining Online would bring them back!

Sean - you're quite welcome to the 100th post, mate. I don't want to see anyone get hurt... ;)

I think it would be more active in that case, since the whole scene would attract more new and younger fans. We sort of miss out on those now, as Sega's latest games only attracts real action RPG freaks :P.

There's nothing particularly wrong with Shining Soul II on the GBA - it's rather like PSO in aspects I find, and would be even more so if you could play it online.

I think the frustration stems not so much from the fact that the new Shining games aren't as good as the old ones, and more from the fact they're more action than strategy-oriented - we Shining fans know what we like, and that's grid-based, turns-based battle systems.

Sega have themselves said it's unlikely they'll make another strategic Shining game, so this seems like the perfect chance to resurrect the best SF fangame ever ;)

Even so, the new games still aren't getting much attention from the press.
If I had the time I'd probably get one just to try it out.

At least the press seem to be giving the new ones the benifit of the doubt; there's one in 3D coming now, maybe that will get it some more attention from the media?

Post by: Newts on May 12, 2005, 01:59:36 pm
I make it about sixty posts so far. Something like that.

As for the new Shining Force games getting much coverage, I've barely noticed any - because they skipped a generation, and the response from the Shining fanbase hasn't exactly been great, I don't think anyone's particularly interesting in Shining Force any more. I mean, there are more Shining games coming out than ever, but as it's not a series with a great reputation at the moment - unlike back in the 90s - nobody's really bothered.

Title: SOnline

no offense intended to anyone but i think that today's gaming industry is being swallowed by porno and anime...things that should all be seperate in their own respects.

Storyline has taken a backseat for typical anime-esque character behaviors, and breasts flying at you in every turn.
Taking a different direction:
I think Squaresoft is the spawn of satan ever since they sold out their signature old-school rpg genius for the shit they shovel at you today...When they bought out Enix i cried

Anywho..keep posting damnit! :D

I completely agree about Squaresoft. It's been a long time since I last enjoyed a Squaresoft game.

I'll try and get Phil to say/record something a bit later, after he's finished gorging himself on the beauty of Shining Force III :newtshappy:

Omar - don't use my smilies again or I'll edit your post to say something really incriminating.

Hey, it's no worse than the people who've managed to make posts inbetween presses XD

Friends, enemies, and fellow forum-goers... you wanted a speech, and this is what you get.  Not much of speech, really, just random babble.  Babble.  Babble, babble, babble.  Spam.  The real lunch meat.

Bah, I forgot my PIN for my online banking.  Friggin' bad password limit.

The most common 4 digit pin is 0007 and the next is 1234
1337 comes in around forty something.

Nah, it was the last four digits of my cell phone number.   At least I thought it was.  Heh... I'm gonna change mine to 7175.

If I can remember what it is in the first place, so I can access my account, so I can actually change it.

Bah.  I need a smoke.
