Is life pointless? Are we here for simply a little while to worship a god then go to heaven? Is life meaningless because everything is set out and ready for us or our desinty? Discuss

[cliche]It's all about the journey, not the destination[/cliche]

Life is as pointless as you make it. Or if u want a point, here it is: procreate! Individuals don't matter, only the species as whole must survive and improve. This idea runs smack bang into our self-awareness. [/img]

I think the purpose of life is self defined..like stated above.

My purpose is to further thought..the mind can triumph over most any boundary...time, death...the only requirement is existence...so that someone is able to conjure the thoughts.

I highly doubt that its to act out the will of some invisible being who speaks through man. However if that does end up being what the afterlife is i'll probly not be entering paridise by the rules that were set Tongue

I beleive in good fortune and actions towards all no matter the differences. If i can make someones day a bit easier, or aquire a new friend...so be it.
I hate conflict and everything associated with it..but i do adore strategy and tactics used in times of war over the course of our species technological evolution.

To sum it up i guess i just hate jerks

U want to know about how pointless life can be?
*revisits the late soviet union*

Communism can make life so pointless, that its no longer a life. Its just an existence. Off course, its debateable. Then again. the communist leaders of the USSR often had conflicting opinions on communism (Take Stalin vs. Gorbachev).

Communism denies the existence of God or anything of the supernatural. Humans are defined as no better than animals, as in the end, when simplified, we all are made of particles. Hence, communism tend to "manage" humans. Equal existence as opposed to "living it up". I might be wrong, but from research, this is what i found, tho bias Tongue

So that really makes life as pointless as heck.

Check this out too. If 'To live is to die', then why live in the first place? Might as well die rite? Probably the thing that separates us from death is the pain barrier. Its not as easy to die (arguable Tongue)

Ok, nudging back into topic : Life is as meaningful as you make it. Revolutionists find it meaningful in creating revolutions and overthrowing governments. Michael Jackson finds it meaningful to sleep with young 12 year old boys, in an innocent way. Musicians find it meaningful to make music for the pure joy of it. Bush finds it meaningful to give error-loaded speeches. Anti-bush'ers find it meaningful to nitpick his speeches Tongue

So there!

Purpose of life? I just thought of remotely amusing, interesting or poetic lines for that one Smiley

- To find the beginning before you reach the end.
- To save the world! (very poetic this one Wink )
- Give others a purpose in life
- To die for Tongue
- Defeating Bowser and his 7 Koopa kids
- Finding your purpose of life?

Suppose your life had a single purpose, and you'd fullfill it, what then?

On a different note, isn't communism all about advancing in cooperation? Although the individual isn't much appreciated, there lies much purpose if that individual cooperates and shares with others. It's not pointless as such therefore, only the individual will dedicate his life to others without seeing direct reward. And the latter thing works contradictory to human nature Smiley.

Seriously, pondering about communism is just as bad as pondering over life. It can get uttlerly confusing, there doesn't seem to make much meaning, and there are always conflicting opinions!

I know, the purpose of life is to see SO complete Wink

life is utterley pointless.. i mean, what do we affect in the grand scale?

absolutley nothing.we have no influence whatsoever on anything anymore.

okay, we may lead happy lives here in the westernised world - but that has nothing to do with anything if you really think about it... is our goal in life to lead a happy life? what about all the suffering that goes on in the world? can we believe in a god when every second a child dies?Huh??

i think not.

o yo yo...

I think, life at its most meaninglessness would be one where consciousness is explained as a property of a physical system, like a recursive one. We would say, "any system that has a recursive loop exhibits the property we call consciousness, we can build a conscious system, and turn it on and off as we please."
Yet, even if we were such a system, we would still wake, go to school, and worry about our social stance.
At a physical level nothing is meaningful, but we live in a social perspective that shields us from any underlying meaninglessness.

heh...deep stuff..not exactly happy, but deep.

Life as a whole has no purpose...if you really wanted to you could just sit..rot..and fade away...no one would know you ever existed.
If you wanted a purpose...you'd find one. In the greater scope of things i dont think that what you as an individual do with you time in this existence will have an impact on anything huge...it will however have an impact on yourself, which i suppose to some would be something huge.

Some choose to seek an answer to this question..and often they come out sounding like folk dreading the normal day-to-day, intelligent peoples, or highly interesting peoples.

Ive given myself reason, purpose, and motivation to move forward.
I'd like a wife, kids, career, stuff. Picture your traditional white picket-fence situation. If something causes me to question life and the reasons it exists then i may ponder it but i wont let it deviate me from my course.

Life
Selfish gene hypotises: a gene whants as many copies of it self in the next generation
That is why we live, to make sure that our genetic code is preserved in the next generation

This is done by selecting the best apoprite mate. Since you want to be sure that all the offspring is yours you defend her against other males.

That we are self aware is just nice, but also a big pain in the ass.

A gene wants to replicate as much as a rock on a steep slope wants to roll downhill. It's unavoidable, there's no want there.

Well
according to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" the answer is pretty clear ("42") just the question is really missing.
IMHO it ?s an as good answer as anything else - life is what you make of it and what you want it to be.  "Choose your goals wisely and with great care cause you might reach em" from my point of view that's what life is for - choosing a goal an spending your time reaching it.

t's not like I really care
