There's a website giving them away, and I have confirmation from 6 people who have gotten iPods this way that it's not a scam!

Just do the ebay one.  You have to become the high bidder on any auction for it to work.  I just found an xbox and bid a dollar on it.  this way i won't win, but it counts toward my pod!

Am I right in thinking that they have to actually buy the item you're bidding on, or just bid more for it than you? There must be some scam at work here

no.  The 5 people just have to follow the link i posted, and when they get to the point of the ebay offer, just bid on anything, becoming the high bidder.  it doesn't matter if you're out bid later, and you don't have to bid on the same thing as me.
