no offense Phill but im goin' with 'Right hand man' Smiley here:
Religion is a heated topic to begin with because if you do happen to be religious you are not open to ANY discussion or comprimise about the subject, you feel that your particular way of worship is the correct one and everyone else is going to hell.
It tends to generate arguements that dont end
but that's not to stop anyone who is willing to discuss this sort of thing

It's a discussion without an end really... there's two (or maybe more) sides, and neither will gain much understanding for the other's ideas. It usually ends in a pointless dramming your point of view over and over til the others leave, or til you're so tired of it that you leave yourself.
And I agree about the right hand... left hand would feel like you're cheating!

[quotetheft]Discussions on religion are like participating in the special olympics.
Even if you win them, you'll still be a retard

Religion, like politics, is one of those things with no winner. It's a completely pointless argument. Usually worse on the internet because people can be a lot ruder.
Have you ever seen an argument between an atheist and religous person that ended with either saying "You know, you're right! My belief system IS complete nonsense. I'll believe what you do!".
Didn't think so.
The only arguments that come close to religion, and sometimes even surpass it, are computers. Linux vs Windows, C++ vs Java, 4 space indent vs tabs etc. I never understood the point in arguing about these things. It's equivelant to arguing over whether a normal screwdriver is better than a cross-head screwdriver.

Well, I think in some forms religion is unhealthy and detrimental for one's mental sanity. Yet in other forms it can be a stimulus, and enhance people's capablities.
I don't think discussions about it are fruitless. They are, however, a rather sensitive and personal issue. Many people feel personally insulted when you discreditize their beliefs, yet I don't feel that beliefs define one's personality or identity
