I suppose I'd best make an announcement about this.

Firstly, I'd like to say a massive thank-you to the people who've voiced their support for the project. I realise some (most) of you were just posting 'cos people here made you, but I'll let that count Tongue

Anyways, I'm sure some of you are eager to know if work on SO will resume. The old code is more than a little dated, so most of it is being scrapped. Fear not though, the new features should make up for this short delay in restarting things. There's still some kinks in the design to work out, but it'll all get sorted in time. As always, anyone who wants to suggest a feature is welcome to. No idea when the next demo will be out. I wouldn't count on it being in the next few months, as I have a degree and a girlfriend to take care of. I'll be using the worklog feature on the site to keep you all updated, so once I fix the site up you can check there to see what me and Newts are doing =)

So in other words, yes, it's back.

Update
I'll post updates in this topic for the time being. Worklogs will be ready by January Tongue

So, what's been happening in the world of Shining Online? Not a great deal, although I've solved some particularly taxing problems.

We now have a custom built animation system. In the original version, all the animation data was hard coded, which meant it wasn't very flexible. Now it's all stored in external files, and it's far nicer. We also have an improved object and resource management systems. Not very interesting, but it makes my job about 100 times easier. Adding new animations, weapons and enemies is now as simple as dropping a file in the data folder. Which is exactly how I wanted it all those years ago.

I did manage to get a very basic IRC client running a few months ago, although I haven't worked on it for a while. The idea was for the game to use IRC as a lobby, which means I don't have to write a chat server. Which is nice.

Expect more regular* updates from now on.

I didn't realise how little work I'd done since May. Time for a Kick Up The Arse(tm).

* By regular, I mean twice a year.

*whew* the last SOnline thread unless ive missed one hehe, I miss the game mates Sad i truly do. Beleive me I completely understand about the intricacies of life getting in the way of the development..or even perhaps boredom or coder's block setting in and tossing a spanner in the gears. I understand that drive is a limited concept that often comes in spurts, and by no means is my intention to crack the whip or kick the arse.

I wanted to say in my own way that i missed the SO Project Sad Im eternally grateful for the demo as ive something that i can actually sit down, boot up, and play Smiley But the possibilities mates are what's eating me. The demo is only a glympse of what SOnline could be. My imagination runs with it and takes me to different places, and that makes me want it..alot Sad

I know i havnt been the most active member on the board lately, and although Newts and Ty being the No 1 mates (there's a whooooole lot of you in that catagory hehe sorry for leavin' you out Smiley ) I havnt been all that in touch with them lately for life reasons Sad But i never forget about you guys and the fun we've had here on the pitch at YoBlah.

Cheers and whatnot Smiley
