You've probably heard people say that, give enough monkeys enough time and enough typewriters, and they'll create the entire works of Shakespeare. You've definitely heard it now, because I've just said it.

That's the prologue to this website. It's a Java application which is simulating monkeys and typewriters and comparing their results to Shakespeare's originals. So far the best record is 27 letters (set by me, in fact):

KING RICHARD. Old John of G,,NXCj;AM-LN.R61!.YYNf(w9qiiHBT...

It's quite fun, in a stupid kind of way. Give it a go.

What I found rather weird was the very unrandom result production.

The best each day was generally 25,26 or 27 letters in a row.

Perhaps that could be to do with the normal starting amount of monkeys you get given.

It doesn't really say whether they've included the fact the space bar is larger and more prone to being bashed etc.

It would certainly make an interesting grid computing project.

After 2.92198e+54 pages in this session, a monkey typed:

        THE PROLOGVE.

        I Come no morebZtDoMeY1r?Oj3a3Q
        .4DC-S7F!&;P]...

the first 29 letters of which match "King Henry the Eighth"

SC: dead again, dun dun dun.

Good work, Ace.

FACT - it would take only two monkeys and half a typewriter to recreate the full works of Alberto.

Maybe he's being used in that Java experiment Tongue

He'll turn up in a few months, make a post saying "I'm back" and not post again for six months. It's the way the good Doctor works.
