Great site by the way, I love shining force its one of my all time favourite games. I've always wanted to make my own shining force style game... finaly now I am!

Its in the very early prototype stage. I thought I would create a game that people could play in their browser without downloading anything, that might increase the likelihood that people give it a go! I am using the HTML 5 Canvas element so its all in Javascript. The source is actually in Typescript but then its transpiled into a Javscript bundle.

I wanted the game mechanics to be instantly recognisable as a homage to Shining Force 1 and 2, but I want to put my own elements into it as well - so there might be something a bit different comming.

I am just using free assets I found on itch and elsewhere at the moment, but I may want to pair up with an artist at somepoint if I see anyone's artwork that I think would be good for the game!

I also have an idea for a story for the RPG which I'm keeping secret at the moment!

Please bare in mind this is a very early prototype, but what I have so far is available to try on itch at https://salamanca.itch.io/legends-of-salamanca

I look forward to updating with further updates on the game and also to getting some comments and feedback.

I have 2 directions for where this game can go, I would like to have a 2 player over the internet mode, and also a story mode where you play on your own.

Look forwards to sharing and getting involved in this community

So far I have implemented

movement
attack
very simple items usage implementation
different attack ranges

Whats on the agenda

ability to use magic
mechanism for leveling up and gaining experience

at some point I'm really going to need some better animations and graphics!!!

The fact I missed my own designated day means I cannot blame anyone else!

I'm still in NZ!
Smiley

Miss you all.
We should have some kind of weird forum party day.

I designate 21-09-21.

On that day, regardless of time zone, ye olde blah should shine with force once more!

Hey guys, it's been a while.

For those of you who don't know me, years ago I started working on a Shining Force fan game using GameMaker. I spent the last year doing a total re-work of my engine, making things a bit more flexible, easier to work with, and adding a bunch of "Wish List" features. That said, I just finished porting the engine to the latest version of GameMaker (GMS2.3) and the project is now available via GitHub and my Google drive.

The engine itself is "Feature Complete" meaning you should have everything you need to create a complete SF game. Also included is the first 30 minutes of my game which should contain an example of everything so it can be reverse-engineered.

One final note. Just because I'm making the engine available, doesn't mean I'm totally done with it. I will still continue to update and improve it over time as well as make some tutorial videos for you guys (eventually). I just wanted to make it available since it's at a point where you can make a complete game with it.

Enjoy!

Battle ranges are now working properly. Land effects and movement profiles are all taken into account, so it's possible to have character classes that move faster or slower on certain terrains.

Attack ranges are now also working and are calculated using the character's equipment. Standard weapons like swords can axes target just adjacent squares, but there's also support for spears, bows, and other long-range attacks. And it will work for magic, too!

Sounds great!

Have you looked at the Shining Force Central disassembly project on GitHub? They have disassemblies of Shining Force, Shining Force II and Shining Force CD. I've used the SF2 one a couple of times to figure out stats and the scripting system used by the game.

I'm currently data mining a ROM of the original shining force to better understand it's mechanics, architecture, and limitations to get a better idea of what to do for my own game. I only started ROM hacking about a week ago, and there's no post anywhere that I can find about what offsets correspond to what information. I've found where character, class, and item information is, but not how to interpret all of it yet. The first major thing I've found out so far is that Sky Warriors are able to equip the Chaos Breaker.

I'll be sharing the offsets in a later post once I find out how to properly format it.

The old times were the best. So much has happened since then; I moved to the US, Newts moved to Germany and Devlyn moved to the UK. Just a little bit of change there  Shocked
