Off-topic: Sars Cure

Rock sent me this and insisted that I’d put it up. So here I go! It’s a statement from his company:

NEW BREED OF DISINFECTANT KILLS “SARS” SUPER VIRUS: VIRKON BEING USED IN CHINA TO CONTAIN DISEASE

SUNRISE, FL – Virkon, the new disinfectant found effective in dealing with Norwalk outbreaks on cruise ships, kills the virus that most experts believe causes the dangerous new form of pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Chinese authorities recently began using Virkon for SARS infection control, according to its manufacturer, UK-based Antec International.

The alarming fact is that SARS has spread to 13 countries in less than two months. Since February 1st, more than 1,600 cases of SARS have been identified globally, 59 in the United States. This highly infectious disease has caused 58 deaths around the world to date.

Experts believe SARS is caused by a previously unknown strain of coronavirus. While health officials initially believed SARS was spread only by close, face-to-face contact, recent reports indicate, that it may be airborne and much more easily spread than originally thought. It is stated that the virus could survive for three hours outside the body on inanimate objects such as tabletops and kitchen counters.

The rapid spread of this contagious disease is a consequence of globalization and increased international travel. Combine this with the advent of new emerging diseases such as noroviruses and growing concerns about bioterrorism, and the ability to thoroughly disinfect our public and private facilities rises from a nicety to a necessity.

“Proper disinfection is a critical first step in preventing and containing contagious disease outbreaks,” said Heinz J. Niedermaier, CEO of BiosafetyUSA, the exclusive U.S. distributor of Virkon. “Virkon is a new and unique type of disinfectant cleaner that works faster and more safely on more surfaces against more viruses, bacteria, fungi and spores than any other disinfectant. It raises the bar as to what organizations can do to protect the public health.”

Virkon has been proven to be effective against more than 580 different strains from 20 viral families, 43 bacterial genera and 27 fungal genera, and can be used on soft surfaces like carpets and upholstery without causing damage. Besides killing the SARS and Norwalk-like viruses, it is effective against smallpox, Hepatitis, salmonella, E. coli, HIV, Legionella and toxic molds. It is produced in the United Kingdom by Antec International and distributed in the United States by BiosafetyUSA.

Kenneth P. Rush, BiosafetyUSA president, said that in addition to more than 60 cruise ships, several biohazard companies have used the product. Schools in Broward County including St. Thomas Aquinas High School and several public schools have begun using Virkon. “We have been extremely impressed with Virkon and its effectiveness in cleaning and disinfecting,” said Father Kelly, the Dean of St. Thomas Aquinas High School.

“Healthcare facilities, schools, law enforcement departments, transportation providers and other commercial facilities all have a social responsibility to do their part to minimize the spread of contagious disease,” said Rush. “Disease outbreaks such as the SARS and Norwalk outbreaks clearly demonstrate this need. We are offering a new alternative that is safe, affordable and much more effective than other disinfection methods. We want to get the word out that there is a better way.”

In addition to its suitability for use on soft surfaces not treatable by other disinfectants, Virkon has several other unique advantages. It cleans and disinfects in one step, eliminating the need to pre-clean; it’s fast-acting; it comes in a powder form that is easy to transport and store; it has a three-year shelf life; and is safer and presents less health risk to users. It is also an environmentally friendly product.

”We’re not a better Lysol,” Rush said. ”We’re a new category of disinfectant.”
